In Loving Memory of Cartoon
On February 26th a tragedy befell us. In the blink of an eye, our hearts
were changed forever. At a gathering that was initially intended to increase
peace and unity within the Chicano hip-hop community, ignorance became a
catalyst for violence. Unfortunately, not everyone came with good intentions and
pure hearts. Gunfire erupted in the parking lot of the Galaxy Theater shortly
after the show, and one of our voices was abruptly silenced by darkness. Steve
Rivera (Cartoon of O.T.W.) was slain within minutes of performing a song
entitled "Purple Heart", which was an expression of grief over losing friends to
gang violence. It was his way of coping with the loss of his peers to the
streets. Moments later, he joined them. The coward who shot him disappeared
into the darkness and is probably drowning in his own pool of self-hatred.
Jealousy is the devil. We only find consolation in knowing that our Lord is a
True and Just God, and He saw everything go down. Even if the murderer and his
accomplices are captured and served with life-time sentences to feed the prison
industrial complex, we have to accept the fact that the senseless shootings
won't cease. No, not as long as there is a big business of manufacturing killing
machines. Think about it, I've never seen a neighborhood that makes their own
bullets and guns. Have you?
I'm convinced that only when He establishes His Righteous Kingdom will peace and security truly be pronounced on the streets. Until then, we ask that you pray for his family because they knew Steve's shining person better than anyone else and have the hardest job of coping with this loss. His compatriots will miss his friendship and the World will have to mourn a blessed soul that touched everyone with his deep lyrics and warm smile.
Rest In Peace, Cartoon
"Happy are those conscious of their spiritual need, since the kingdom of the heavens belongs to them.
"Happy are those who mourn, since they will be comforted.
"Happy are the mild-tempered ones, since they will inherit the earth.
"Happy are those hungering and thirsting for righteousness, since they will be filled.
"Happy are the pure in heart, since they will see God.
"Happy are the peaceable for they will be called 'sons of God.' "- Matthew 5: 3-9
