Solo DIOS Sabe Mi Destino by Salvador Rojas
I was on an assignment taking photos in a small pueblo in the Mexican state of Guerrero. A small town where the only paved road is the main street that runs through the heart of the city, every other street was dirt. I was walking down the main road with my camera in hand looking for my shots, when a local youth peddled towards me on his bicycle. I thought he was going to ask me what I was taking photos of. Instead with a tone of curiosity in his voice he asked Eres Cholo? I gently smiled at him while he looked at me to confirm his suspicion. I didnt know what to say, because I never labeled myself as a Cholo. Since I didnt answer his first question, he then asked de donde eres? I replied Cercas de Los Angeles en los Estados Unidos He nodded Yes like I proved what he was thinking. He asked me to speak to him in English. I asked him What do you want me to say? He smiled from ear to ear like it was music to his ears. He looked at my FIRME tee shirt and said Te quiero compra tu playera. Mi lo Vendes? I asked him in Spanish if he really liked my shirt, he answered SI!. I literally took the shirt off my back and handed him my FIRME tee shirt and said Un Regalo. He couldnt believe it and told me Gracias with a warm smile. I took his photo holding up his new FIRME shirt. He put the shirt on. It was at least two sizes too big, but that didnt matter to him. We took a photo together, shook hands and he thanked me once again. He jumped on his bike and road off down a dusty street representin FIRME CLOTHING, not knowing who I was or what I do. Ill probably never see him again. But for that moment our worlds met because of a FIRME tee shirt. I left him with my shirt and he left me with a story. He goes down his road. I go down mine
