Mayor Antonio Villariagosa, acting in his first day in office, reinforced his alliance with the Police Department by promising to use our taxpayer dollars to employ a thousand more cops in the ciudad. This, at a time when we hear about budget cuts left and right. Who voted to buy more cops? If I remember correctly, the measure by the Sherriff's Department to increase the sales tax in their behalf failed miserably. The people felt it was simply not necessary. Money would be more wisely invested in the training and backround processing of the current police force. But no chance of that happening when the new mayor is so close to Cheif "Escaped from New York" Bratton. They've even become traveling buddies-going up to Sacramento together; accompanying each other on out-of-town trips together. Villaraigosa was even spotted carrying the chief's luggage for him. In fact, so tightly is he clinging to Bratton's nutsacks, that, around here, he is officially deemed William's personal jock strap.
Maybe I'm not the smartest guy in town, but it doesn't take a genius to see the last thing this city needs to do is unleash a bunch of trigger-happy cowboys into the streets (which is exactly what the current cadet class looks like). The incidents of wrongful death situations is going to statistically increase and potentially bankrupt the city funds-preventing the existence of more worthwile programs where the community is better served. How much money has been spent to pay off families in out-of-court settlements when humans
are victimized by a misuse of force or a bad decision made in a rush of adrenaline. The answer lies hidden, deep in the formulas where calculated losses are averaged and collateral damage reaps profits. But that's all socio-political-economics. What about the lives of the people victimized by this industrial fiasco?
