In the early 90s, Los Tumbados spent their time crafting their own hip-hop style. Their style and sound eventually evolved into a six-man band that incorporated live instruments: bass slaps, guitar riffs, funky keyboard melodies, live drums and amazing Spanish rhymes. From the late 90s until the end of 2004, Los Tumbados rocked and astonished crowds all over the West Coast. Who could forget last year�s sold-out performance and its incredible mosh pit at the House of Blues in Hollywood? Soon after, choices taken by some members caused the band to dismantle, but the remaining members took their style back to their original hip-hop formula; the end result is nothing less than mind-blowing. It is difficult to describe how the group managed to take the �Tumbado style� and re-adapt it to hip-hop�especially at a time when most groups sound astonishingly similar!
Like their previous 8-song underground hit, 213, the new album, Tekolotes, pushes creativity and emceeing into a whole new level. In a period when �flowing in Spanish� is fast becoming a trend, the emcee�s mastery of the Spanish language and lyrical art-form combine to give the album an edge over most other artists. The group�s diversity in musical backgrounds and having �paid their dues� throughout the long years of underground struggles provide a highly creative musical production that is seldom heard in today�s over saturated �Latin Hip-hop� market. The feel of the album�s music is magnified by the inclusion of tracks recorded with the live band, prior to their break-up, while others exhibit their hip-hop fundamentals.
More recently, Los Tumbados became one of four groups to win a spot in the U.S. national �Latin Hip-Hop Tour�. Many groups competed in a few showdowns where judges and crowds of hip-hop heads chose the winning groups based on style, performance and music. The tour will be hitting major metropolitan spots such as Portland, Las Vegas, Denver, Santa Fe, Houston, New York and many others. Be on the lookout for Los Tumbados in your city, and make sure to cop their new album titled �Tekolotes�.
