The Milwaukee-based native by way of Chicago, Illinois returns to the front of the Latin Hip-Hop scene with a new Kinto Sol album �La Sangre Nunca Muere�, as well as a new mixed Latin Hip-Hop compilation album titled "Cholos Cholas y Pistolas." While in Los Angeles, Califaztlan to perform with Kinto Sol at the world famous House of Blues on the Sunset Strip, DJ Payback took a few moments to speak with BrownPride.com about his new mixed CD and more in our exclusive interview and photo shoot.
How did you get your start in DJing?
When I was about 12 years old I saw my brother DJing for the first time and I liked what he was doing, he used to play at house parties, Quinceaneras, and stuff like that. After a while I started going with him to help him mix and I really enjoyed it and I got hooked on it, the rest is history.
What do you enjoy more DJing or Producing?
I enjoy both, because when I'm DJing somewhere I like making people bounce or dance to whatever I'm playing, and I like producing because I make the music that I'm going to play wherever I'm going to DJ, besides I like to create songs from scratch, making the beat and helping the artists come out with a dope song.
Who were some of your musical influences that get your respect as an artist?
When I was growing up I always love Spanish music from the 70's and 80's groups like: Los Bukis, Terricolas, and Pastelesverdes. As I got older I got into hip-hop, but I was always proud of being Latin so I was always looking for Latin Hip-Hop, I liked groups liked: Delinquent Habits, Kid Frost, Cypress Hill, Proper Dos, and Funkdoobiest, those were some of my influences.
Tell us about your Kinto Sol Family?
The Kinto Sol family is my real blood family; Skribe and El Chivo are my real blood brothers. It's a blessing being able to work with your own brothers, especially in the music business, honesty, loyalty and trust are the best foundation to stay strong and overcome any obstacles the music industry brings.
You guys just released a new Kinto Sol album "La Sangre Nunca Muere"?
The new Kinto Sol album "La Sangre Nunca Muere� is really family oriented with good messages but still keeping it real hip-hop. Kinto Sol has three albums out right now "Del Norte al Sur", "Hecho en Mexico" and "La Sangre Nunca Muere", must haves for any Latin Hip-Hop CD collections.
You are well known for your DJ Mix Compilations, how many have you produced?
I have several mix compilations Aztec Souls, Brown Life, Brown Life 2, Hecho en Aztlan, Hecho en Aztlan 2, Aztlan Warriors and the latest Cholos Cholas y Pistolas. Before I was making Latin Hip-Hop compilations I had various mix tapes in the underground in other genres of music.
Describe your style to the people that haven't heard a
Payback mix?
When you hear a Payback mix, you get a non-stop-raw-hip-hop-mix with all kinds of blends and scratches from start to finish. You're going to hear songs from artists from all over the country blend together in one cohesive mix with my personalized touch.
What's the process of making a mix CD?
You just have to have good songs, skills and a lot of inmaginacion.
How is the process of producing a Mix CD different from producing a Kinto Sol album?
Well making a mix CD it's all me, versus making a Kinto Sol album where it�s the whole group putting it together as one.
Coming from Milwaukee how does that effect your music compared to hip-hop groups that are based out of Los Angeles or New York?
I think coming from the Midwest has help us because we get a lot of support from the Midwest and at the same time when we go to the West Coast or East Coast people be like I didn't think there was any Latin hip-hop groups in the Midwest. Therefore we get love from them too.
How is the Latin Hip-Hop scene in the Midwest?
It's growing bigger day by day and it's getting stronger all over.
You guys represent hard for Mexicans in Chicago and Milwaukee, What kind of response do you guys get out there as the local talent?
We get a lot of support from Chicago and Milwaukee, we've been DJing for years in this areas before we even started Kinto Sol, so all those years on the grind have finally been paying off.
What's next for you and Kinto Sol in 2005?
I have "Aztec Souls 2" coming out soon, a new Chivo album and other artist that I been working on for a minute now. We're working on a movie where we are going to have a lot of Latin rappers as actors in the movie. We also want to put out another Kinto Sol album by the end of this year.
