San Diego (BrownPride.com Exclusive) � On April 23, 2005, Chicano Park in
San Diego, California celebrated its 35th anniversary. Chicano Park was founded
on April 22, 1970 when the community of Barrio Logan Heights and Chicano
movement activists joined forces to protest the construction of a Highway Patrol
station on the present site of the park. The struggle for Chicano Park came to
symbolize the Chicano / Mexican people's struggle for self-determination and
self-empowerment. Now brilliantly colored murals line the bridges that not only
connect the freeway systems, but also connect us to our past and each other as a
people. Despite the forecast for rain, thousands and thousands of
Chicanos/Mexicans from over Aztlan come down to Logan Heights for the annual
festivities.
On the eastside of the park, San Diego�s finest lowriders, bombs, and lowrider bicycles lined the lomas with one classic paint job after another. Some of the best rides feature artwork from an artist that signed his pieces with �Cordero.� This homie could give Fonzy, OG Abel, and Cartoon a run for their money, word. On the concession side of the park Chicano/a-based clothing companies represented their own individual style, featuring booths from Firme Clothing, Chicano Style, Industrias Ilegales, Chicana Wear, Orale Wear, and Insurgentes to name a few of clothing lines available. The kiosk area served as the epicenter for the speakers, musicians, indigenous dancers, and the numerous folklorico dance groups that performed that day with their positive energy.
